Although we didn't quite have 48 hours to solidly explore the city, after building up a list of wonderful recommendations and having about 4 hours to scope out some of the East side of the city, Joe and I thought we'd put our spare time to good use and scout out some little gems over this little stretch of Berlin. With empty bellies and a page on notes decked out with a list of places longer than the weekly shop- we pulled up city mapper and got going (not before stopping at a Photoautomat though)...

I know we barely touched on the city, I thought I'd pop together a handful of my favourite discoveries- which even looking back on have me wanting to go back already! Hopefully it won't be long...

Schwesterherz

Let's be honest- the chances are, if you stock Rifle Paper Co, HAY and have an interior that rivals some of the dreamiest Pinterest boards then there's a solid possibility it's going to be love. Joe and I stumbled across this shop whilst browsing around Gärtnerstraße, and I probably could have spent all day rifling through their racks of cards and shelves of stationary (my sad looking bank balance post visit says it all). On top of that they do delicious coffee too (not that you'd need another reason to stay here longer, of course).

Gärtnerstraße 28, 10245 Berlin, Germany

Victoria Met Albert

After hearing great things about this little lifestyle and clothing shop, we made sure to dig this one out whilst snooping the streets. With shelves of colour coordinated homewares (something I seem to embarrassingly gravitate towards) and some beautiful independent brands for both women and men- it's a shop even Joe could get behind (and great for picking up gifts too)!

Dunckerstraße 81, 10437 Berlin, Germany

Silo

Although we didn't get to grab a seat on this occasion, I wanted to stop by and see if this places was as well loved as I'd heard. Boasting a menu with enviable Australian inspired brunch options including avocado and Shakshuka (as well as a specialist coffee menu), there's seems to be a reason this place is always busy- I'm just going to have to allow for more time on my next visit to try the avocado on toast...

Gabriel-Max-Straße 4, 10245 Berlin, Germany

PhotoAutomat

I couldn't resist popping in these gems that are dotted across the city. Having seen them on Instagram and have kindly been told where a few of them were dotted, Joe and I made sure to visit a couple whilst exploring. With a handful offering colour options and different variants, it's worth popping your head in and grabbing a couple (plus at €2 they're considerably cheaper than any London alternatives)!

Burgermeister

This feels like a bit of a cop out again as we didn't ~actually~ get to try these burgers, but it was another shout that got recommended so often I couldn't not get a little excited when we walked past (especially after seeing how incredible they looked on Instagram)! Situated under a railway bridge (and what I've heard used to be a public loo) it's not hard to spot, but seems to always be pretty bustling- so get there early!

Oberbaumstraße 8, 10997 Berlin, Germany

Markthalle

One thing I love about trying food in new cities are open markets where you can browse and sample everything- which definitely makes lunch times more fun, right? Markthalle is just one of these places, and has every type of cuisine and foodie favourite you could wish for. Whether that's cured meats, Mac n cheese or some good old traditional German bakery treats- it's the perfect place to grab lunch and take five. Or ten- and works great if you're in a group who fancy trying different things too.

Eisenbahnstraße 42-43, 10997, Berlin

Pony Hütchen

We didn't get to discover much vintage in the city, but we did discover Pony Hütchen, tucked just behind Markethalle. With a selection of vintage and antique homewares lining the walls, shelves and even spilling out onto the oustide pavement- it's a bit of an Aladdins cave of old and older, and definitely somewhere to pick up something special (just leave room in your suitcase)!

Pücklerstraße 33, 10997 Berlin, Germany

Brammibal's Donuts

Okay now this one i got very excited about. If you're as much of a fan of bagels and donuts as me (basically any food with a hole in the middle)- we gotta talk. This riverside gem is the home to the most delicious vegan donuts (which naturally makes them more healthy, right?) and boasts some of the most delicious flavours in town. Whether you're after coconut matcha, fig and bitter chocolate, peanut butter and fudge, salted caramel or even a classic cinnamon sugar- this place has you covered. Just leave room for a bagel too (or just get a box to go)!

  7. My partner went to Berlin and had a bad experience, so that has put him off going back. But I have always wanted to explore this city. So I am going to go, with or without him.
