(Trench & Dress: C/O Laura Ashley, Shirt: Whistles, Boots: Jeffrey Campbell via Sarenza, Hat: Topshop)
If you follow my Twitter account, and take note of any of the utter nonsense or attempts at wit that pop up on your feed you would have noticed my minor qualms about continually having my fingers in too many sartorial pies (as it were). I often wonder how my style is perceived through my blog, as in my opinion I don't have a particularly 'strong' look. Unlike a lot of my favourite bloggers, I don't particularly think I have any consistency to the way I dress. I can't rock a cool beanie with a hot Nasty Gal dress from day to day, I definitely don't ooze that 'off duty' cool look so many do- and most of the time I can't even stick to my favourite beehived sixties look. Without getting all daft on you, each day to me is about expressing how I'm feeling at that particular point (ok, I got daft). For example, say I've listened to the whole of Rumours on repeat whilst daydreaming of lounging at SXSW- the chances are the rest of the day will be spent prancing around in a Free People jumpsuit (post coming soon) and pretending to be marginally (read; far) more cooler than I am. Another day may be spent watching Audrey Hepburn or Wes Anderson films (you can see where I'm going with this)- and out comes the beehive and/or ridiculous collars. Or like today, sitting on Pinterest for way too long, seeing far too many pictures of Cara Delevigne and throwing on a sweatshirt and bobble hat. It's a silly thing, but sometimes it's quite fun.
Anyway, long story short- apparently when getting dressed on this particular day I obviously had a few ideas in mind. Part of me was shouting 'sassy office worker' (yeah, ok Liv), another '60s colour blocking goddess'- and judging by my footwear, another 'Bowie disco queen'. Hence the creation of this Laura Ashley get up- build of my favourite white blouse, colour blocked shift dress, traditional trench coat and favourite seventies inspired disco platforms. It was one of the easiest things to throw on and certainly left me feeling pretty ladylike for the rest of the day; I guess sometimes a few timeless basics have a pretty strong success rate when you're not sure what to wear, eh?
x
P.S This post probably didn't make any sense. Nevermind.
and here's what I wore...
Liv, can you maybe stop being quite so beautiful - thanks ;) xx
ReplyDeleteHow fabulously chic! Beautiful look Olivia x
ReplyDeleteIt's seems so odd that you feel there's a lack of consistency in the way you dress compared to other bloggers. It's something I think about myself on a daily basis, except I always considered you one of the bloggers who had their 'look' down. It's ladylike and a little retro and rather wonderful.
ReplyDeletePerfect styling, as always x
I love the dress, it would be perfect for work for me. x
ReplyDeleteYour shoes are gorgeous xo

Amazing outfit! xx
ReplyDeleteI'm the same as you, the way I style myself is completely subjective on how I'm feeling that particular day! The dress is gorgeous, love that you've popped it together with a shirt xx

The colour blocking here is so perfect :) And I agree-I think style should be influenced more by mood!!

TOTES GET YOU GRL! Was explaining pretty much exactly the same thing to my colleague today - I only wore my particular jumper because I saw myself wearing it in the asos trend guide and thought - hmm havent' whacked that one out in a while. I then wore it with black, tailored items because the day before I'd rocked 90's slobby grunge so had to flip the coin!
ReplyDeleteooh how the style brain works haha
beautiful look!<3

This post made PERFECT SENSE, except for the part where you feel your style isn't cohesive. I must disagree! I was just thinking, weirdly, before clicking on this post in Bloglovin', that I wish I had more a set "style" like you do. You've definitely got a sort of classy, semi-retro, polished look going on. And that carries over from outfit to outfit. Yeah, you may be influenced by different things at different times, but I definitely think you have a distinct ~look~. If that makes any sense at all! Still, I totally understand your sentiment, and I think a lot of people will. It's hard to stick to one specific style, as it were, and from one day to the next I find myself drawn to completely different sartorial aesthetics. That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with drawing influences from wildly differing places! I get bored seeing the same outfit over and over on blogs, with minor variations, so I say embrace the variety! x
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone should have to pin point their style to one specific type. My style is all over the map too!

Looking goooooooood Liv. I always think you have a particular type of style, always very ladylike and classic. Timeless, pretty, feminine - these are all words which spring to mind when I think of your style! And you're one of my fav bloggers so I think you're doing a good job being inspired by all the different things that you've listed. It's definitely working for me! xxx
ReplyDeleteLOVE this outfit, those shoes are beautiful!

Ooo, I know what you mean! Part of me wishes I had a more set style, but I've pretty much come to terms with the fact that mine is all over the place. That's what makes it fun, I guess? Anyway, I am loving your style today haha, this dress is gorgeous and a trench never goes astray!

I think it's totally fine to go with how you feel each day to choose what to wear, and you seem to have 60s colour blocking queen down to a tee, here! :)
ReplyDeletebabe... that is all
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely outfit! And I'm completely similar, but on a less glamorous level. One day, ripped jeans and a baggy crop will seem appropriate, and the next it's a midi dress with wedges. Looking gorgeous as always, Olivia!
ReplyDeleteRosa at hello scrapbook x
I'm with you here - I like to look different all the time! Grungy one day, vintage the next... always shifting.
ReplyDeleteThis is an absolutely perfect outfit, girl. I LOVE everything about this!

Your style is amazing! You have nothing to worry about at all. I don't think style is about keeping to a certain look/style; the way it adapts to your everyday mood is what makes it so great! In love with your colour blocking dress! x

perfect office chic style! :)
ReplyDeleteI know exactly how you feel,
ReplyDeleteI do not have a consistent style and i feel like it's a bad thing,
because people don't know what to expect from my blog..
but variety is a good thing so I guess we should be happy with ourselves and our inconsistent style!

I love your style but I completely understand what you mean since I don't know exactly if I have a 'style' or not... I don't know how to define the word 'style' actually because I think that a real 'style' is when you wear what you like and what you feel comfy with :)

ReplyDeletebeautiful outfit! ahh those shoes too <3 <3 <3
ReplyDeleteYeah, style is just something you have in bundles...you can't taste it or touch it, but you can certainly see it!! xx
ReplyDeletehmmm i definitely know what you mean, i was watching breakfast at tiffany's yesterday (for like the 14th billionth time) and now i just want to wonder around town in a massive black hat, raybans and refer to everyone as "darrrrling" and then i could be watching funny face and suddenly my outfit cravings change to black ankle grazers and a trenchcoat. xx
ReplyDeleteI don't think I am very consistent with my style either. I don't think it really matters; as long as you love what you're wearing.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right, I feel the same - i like everything and anything and I think my style changes from day to day, like you, depending on how I'm feeling or what I've been inspired by but I think that it's something we find harder to notice ourselves and that other people who see us can see the consistency more.
