A little tiny post...

Thursday, 30 August 2012

Just a little tiny post tonight, but tomorrow is the last day to vote in the Cosmopolitan Blog Awards 2012 (eek!) and if you read/like/don't care but have nothing else to do it would mean so so much if you could vote for 'What Olivia Did' under 'Best Established Fashion Blog' ♥

I still find it completely overwhelming to find myself in that short list with some of my absolute favourites, and although I don't consider myself worthy competition for some of the blogs I've been reading since I started writing, if you do read my blog and fancy voting- it really does means the world. I'm so so grateful to every one of you that clicks onto my page, reads and even comments and I totes don't thank y'all enough- so THANK YOU (I mean it)

Now enough of my silly gushing, here's the link!

This month the Take 10 ladies and I teamed up with the print-tastic, fun and certainly ladylike Sugarhill Boutique; and asked to style a selection of the 'pokerface pieces' from their Las Vegas selection. As you may know, I go weak at the knees for a good print (also love their new Windsor dress) so, ready to hit the Casinos, and with chips in tow (plastic, not potato) I opted for this sheer card printed shirt which oozed the perfect amount of vintage sophistication and young girlie fun! I teamed the blouse with my go-to American Apparel easy jeans, cat eyed sunnies and a slick of lipstick- to complete my gambling girl kind of look!

Have a peek at how the other sassy ladies styled the pieces! (Also, welcome our newest member Mel, after saying a sad farewell to lovely Jen!)

How would you style this playful print?

If you've read my blog for any period of time, you'll know that to me, music is pretty much as important to me as fashion. Although it rarely plays a huge part in my outfit posts and general lifestyle content, even down to the lyric titles (which I probably spend an unhealthy amount of time thinking about). I've been thinking a while about including some more music related content into my blog, whether it be playlists, reviews or anything else; but thought I'd begin with some of my favourite live gig photographs.

Whether it be a small record shop tucked away in the depths of East London, to sneaking my DSLR into one of my favourite gig venues (not always recommended) I always try and make sure I have some way of recording my favourite gigs, and you get to know which venues will accept which cameras (many only take small digital compact ones), meaning you can certainly prepare!

Having never had the privilege of a photographer of press pass to a gig, I've managed to make do and have selected some of my favourite photos I've taken (on film, with a Nikon D40 and Canon 500d). Additionally, to get the best pictures I can, I'm usually nerding it up at the front hours before the band begin and playing around with settings ensuring I don't get too many blurred snaps, however I've heard tales of awesome iPhone snaps!

I'd love to hear if you'd be interested in anything more musical on my blog- answers on a post card!

Where Olivia Went: Reading Festival 2012

Having attended only Field Day earlier this year, it seemed my yearly festival agenda had been somewhat sparse until yesterday! Usually lapping up as much field filled live music each summer as I can, spending weekends in tents, living on Nutri-grain bars and smelling more of mud than Marc Jacobs is something I'm more than happy to be familiar with. So, when the idea popped up that I should take my little brother to his first ever festival for the day I did a little leap- I was pretty darn excited to show him the action behind the BBC3 coverage, and listen to some of our favourite bands live in person.

Arriving early afternoon, clad in warm boots and arguably less weatherproof clothing than was appropriate (or so we would later find out) we headed straight for the Dance tent to catch Grimes, before cosying up in the Festival Republic tent with Nottingham's finest Jake Bugg and Dog is Dead. After enjoying some warm-up sing a long's and a reminiscent stay at Enter Shikari's set, we went in search of some tea time snacks (a pre main stage feast if you will) and dined on tasty pizza as The Vaccines began. Following their set we moved in for our last act of the day (damn you last train!) Florence and The Machine, who despite being soaked through (both her, and us) was amazing- I may have even shed a tiny tear...

Overall we had a really lovely day, and despite having to miss my faves Metronomy and Kasabian (sob sob) saw some amazing acts, and now I can only eagerly await tonight's BBC3 coverage (expect some serious tweeting!)

(Playsuit: Mod Dolly, Sunglasses: Free with Cosmo!, Shoes: Victoria Plimsolls)

With this weekend bringing the hottest day of the year, seaside and family visits and more barbecued food you can shake a skewer at, I tried to make the most of the sunshine, and parade around in my most summery get-ups, embracing shorts, sunglasses and a totally maverick no-sleeves ethos- check me out!

On Sunday I paid a visit to my nan who lives by the British pebbly seaside, and although it was ever-so-slightly overcast, enjoyed indulging in cool glasses of Sprite, lots of family chatter and driving along the seafront. I chose to wear my new favourite Mod Dolly playsuit, which has the lovliest collar and bow detail, and is also elasticated; which although sounds daft is perfect for hiding a Sunday lunch (gotta be honest!) I also teamed it with my favourite freebie Ray-Ban style sunglasses which I picked up free with Cosmo, comfy plimsolls and a slick of red lipstick (to compensate for my lack of make up).

On another note, I've been thinking of extending my blog to make it a little more 'Lifestyle and Music' based. I know it pretty much already is, but was curious as to how you'd feel seeing more recipes, maybe DIYS, tutorials, interiors, my personal photography, interviews and playlists! I may even branch into the world of beauty (probably not, I don't even really know what primer is...) but do let me know your thoughts!

On Trend: Sports Luxe

Tuesday, 21 August 2012

When I think of my style, the one word that doesn't come to mind is 'sporty'. To get me into a tracksuit, you either have to back-track 5 years to when I was embarrassingly (and breathlessly) attempting the 'bleep test' in P.E, catch me on a super lazy day, or pay me a great deal of money (or motivation) to get me out and exercising.

jakandjil

However, with the key trend of 'Sports Luxe' carrying us through spring and summer, through to Autumn Winter, and Olympics fever taking over it feels almost rude not to try and give a subtle nod to the trend somehow, preferably without pulling out my striped knee highs are polo shirts.

jackandhil

However, working in Whistles, I have been surrounded by the trend, and may have ever so slightly succumbed to it's chic ways. With leather, silk, crepe, and jersey being the key fabrics; and stripes, clean lines and slouchy silhouettes building the basis of the look, it's far easier to achieve than I'd first anticipated.

jakandjil'

After searching the internet I picked out some of my favourite takes on the look, and only then realised it's probably far easier to build a sporty look than I thought, perfect! With Topshop, Zalando and H&M Trend being the source of many key pieces, there's no need to whip out your old P.E kit, and combing pj style trousers, simple cut t shirts, clean cut blouses and wedge trainers is the basic recipe for success- see you at the finish line!

(Shirt: Pure Collection, Body: Topshop, Shorts: Topshop, Hat: Miss Selfridge, Boots: Soyoushoes, Bracelet: Ever Ours)

I suppose you could say this is my take on the 'Military' trend we're preparing for this autumn. With leather sleeved camo jackets sweeping the blogosphere and more importantly the high street, military jackets adorning the front of most vintage shops- it seems solider-esque style has never been so cool, and I can only suggest swapping Alexa for Action Man.

My take however, was arguably a little more subtle. I'm never one to fully embrace trends (unless they incorporate an oversized collar and ditzy print of course), and therefore opted for this khaki silk shirt; perfectly cool for this mini heatwave we appear to be having, and toned down enough that I can probably wear it under a pinafore or something equally as Primary school-esque come this Autumn. I decided to team it with some denim cut offs and a cream coloured body, for a look arguably a little cleaner than my own, but fun to embrace nonetheless!

Have you dipped your toes into the military trend? How did you wear it so you looked more Moss than Montgomery?
